Elephant

by Enigmatic Clergy

/

about

This song takes as its starting point the ancient story from the Indian sub-continent of six blind men and an elephant and then thinks about what the story may tell us.

lyrics

Me and my friends are blind
Six of us, born together
Each of us live in the dark
lit by sound, touch, and smell.

Men boasting of their catch,
Women singing while they work,
Children who won’t go to bed,
Build the soundscape of our world.

We have
Legs to walk and hands to work,
ears to listen and mouths to speak:
eyes that will never see the world
yet we see more than most.

People brought an elephant
How we would react, they thought.
Reaching out we felt the beast
Building a reality.

Giggles, chuckles, sniggering
Six men dance with elephant.
“It’s a snake, a spear, a rope”,
Diverse pictures in our minds.

Legs to walk and hands to work…

One day a dispute arose
Which god was the strongest
Listening to the arguments
Pious, Angry, full of Rage

“Don’t be silly”, we cried out,
“Look at us and learn from us.
How are you so adamant?
Can you see your gods?

We have
Legs to walk and hands to work,
ears to listen and mouths to speak:
eyes that will never see the world
yet we see more than most.

Trust not your eyes to see truth.
Working side by side is best?
Make not your god like man?
Try to live as god would live.

Even if you think we’re daft
Heed this warning we now give
Blind or not make sure you never
Dance with an elephant!

Legs to walk and hands to work…

So
Fix your eyes on truths unseen,
work together, build your dreams,
share the joys and pain in life,
then you may live as ‘gods’!
